The Waves
Alaia Mentawai is surrounded by some of the worlds best waves.
With consistancy and variety that can't be matched,from perfect barrels,long walls, rippable peaks and even some waves for the less experienced. Our focus is on our guests and their experience in the Mentawais, not our own. With ultimate guest satisfaction in mind we only take small groups ,our boats are never an instant crowd and we find the waves that suit you!
EARLY SEASON
Our early season is between January to March.
Waves in These period is normally mellower fun size. Suitable for surfers who are after fun peeler longboard waves, or intermediate short boarders that who likes up to fun size range (over head high) and not critical waves.
Best time for one of the most iconic right hander waves in the area, burger world.
JANUARY - MARCH
PRE SEASON
Mid peak season April - May is great mix of fun waves and pre-peak season waves.
Normally The weather / winds gets perfect tropical condition during these period.
And the average size range slowly start to gain toward end of May.
Suitable for the surfers who are after average 4ft~, Upper Intermediate Surfers or Above.
For long boarders recommend upper intermediate who rides shorter board option in case some larger waves.
APRIL - MAY
PEAK SEASON
Main season in Mentawai.
Which means we often receive larger swell during these months.
If you are seeking "classic Mentawai Waves" 6ft+ barrels, these months will be the best bet to visit Alaia.
Suitable for upper intermediate to pros who likes powerful and challenging waves.
Can be great for intermediate as well but we do not mix groups between intermediate and expert in one trip.
For long boarders, Suitable for advanced - expert/pros who can surf shortboards in larger conditions.
Not recommend for intermediate - upper intermediate for this period.
JUNE - AUGUST
LATE SEASON
After the peak season, swells starts slowing down around mid September - October.
Similar size range to Mid peak and early season, however slightly different winds, and weather patterns.
So you may still have proper swells in early September.
Then towards October periods goes back to fun size range.
September is suitable for upper intermediate or above, October is great for intermediate to Advanced who are after fun waves.
For long boarder, advanced or above for September, intermediate for October.

WHAT IS MY SURF ABILITY?
Judging your own surf ability is not easy.
It is not just about your skill level.
It is a combination of your skills, knowledge, physical condition & mental strength for surfing and experience surfing over reef.
In our opinion Beginner Surfers do not yet have the experience to really enjoy what the Mentawai's has to offer and there is a chance for beginners to find themselves in dangerous situations.
If However you are an Early Intermediate Surfer or Above the Mentawai's could be your dream destination.
So what ability are you?
Early Intermediate
you are Confidently paddling and catching waves by yourself in the head high range, can duck dive efficiently ,can go left and right, have full control of your surfboard, are learning to do turns, can avoid other surfers, Understand and can follow surfing etiquette
Intermediate : Starting to surf larger waves, confident in a variety of waves, starting to try more moves
Upper Intermediate : Confidently Surf a variety of waves and conditions, can perform more advanced moves starting to get barrelled.
Advanced : Confident surfer - performs advanced moves, airs, carves, turns , confident in barrelling Heavy waves.
Expert : pro level without the sponsors
DO YOU OFFER SURF PHOTO PACKAGE?
Yes, we do!
You can purchase surf photo package at ALAIA.
We keep shooting your surf sessions.
You do not need to commit anything until end of your trip.
However if you are thinking about purchasing the package please bring your external hard drive or SSD for copy the files.

PRICE PER Package is US$200 per person for personal use.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN WE GO SURF PER DAY?
Our package is included "UNLIMITED BOAT USAGE".
So means you can surf whenever many as you want. We do not give you any limitation for going to surf as you are coming to Mentawai for chasing waves of your life time!
My FLIGHT DOESN'T LET ME BRING MY LOG. DO YOU HAVE RENTALS?
Yes, We do have rental longboards at resort. Size range from 9'0" - 9'6". Mostly single fin PU.
Rental fee is US$250 per trip.
This price not includes repair, replacement fees.
Pre-booking available 1 month before your trip. If you are interested in renting one of our longboards please contact us for availability.
We do not have mid-length or shortboard rentals.
*Please bring your own leash and wax.
Also in case you need extra Leashes and wax available for purchase.

WILL A SURF GUIDE be ON THE BOAT?
Yes, One of our experienced surf guides will be on the boat to make sure find best waves for you.
We do not set a schedule to going to surf.
We discuss with you, and you can tell us what you feel like.
We will let you know what wave options are available.
We try our best to find perfect waves for you.
CAN I BUY A SURF BOARDS IN MENTAWAI?
Surf area is located by very remote part of Mentawai Islands and there is no surf shops or not even road, cafe or restaurant on the island.
Little village near by (other island) only have very basic needs.
However if you are thinking about getting new boards and receiving it when arrived at ALAIA?
Yes, it is possible and we can help organising it from Bali.
These days a lots of good boards are available in Bali but organise shipping to different part of Indonesia isn't easy.
We have been receiving most of our personal boards to here by shipped from Bali or even from Australia many times.
Stock boards will take max 2 weeks to get here, Custom order will take longer (depending on the shaper) but good to start prepare early as possible.

I'm A BEGGINER SURFER, CAN I COME?
Mentawai Waves breaks over shallow reef, the waves are more powerful than most destinations. So smaller waves generally break closer to the reef. So are shallow.
We like to be honest with our guests / future guests because it can be dangerous for inexperienced surfers.
Those reasons above, also we do not offer surf lessens, school for learning surfing at ALAIA.
And please remember someone push you into waves in the proper lineup is very dangerous for you and other surfers in lineup, which against surf etiquette.
If you are looking for something for learning basic surfing, We recommend you to look into suitable destinations.
Exception : your travel partners (such as parter or parents who understand surfing) helps you to experience surfing, we try to find best spots for you.
Our minimum surf ability requirements is intermediate.
HOW MANY BOARDS SHOULD I BRING?
Mentawai islands does not have any surf shop to buy replacement boards or any of surf equipments.
We recommend you to bring one of your most favourite all-round boards, and 1 x back up all-round board.
Also you can check forecast before your departure.
If forecast shows some promising swell, you can add a step up or 2, if forecast shows some smaller day good to have a smaller condition board.
Majority of guests bring 3-4 boards to their trip, Also 2-4 extra regular leashes (please do not use comp leash), few fin sets, UV repair kit + repair tape for emergency. Couple of Warm to Tropical wax.
